Olympus Om-D E-M5

New Olympus OM-D E-M5 screen protectors have arrived

Jun

Given the hard life my cameras are acustomed to I do try to protect them in some small way.  Now with the display screens being a common feature of most modern cameras I find it necessary to protect them where possible (and I have scratched and chipped a few over the years).  My Olympus OM-D E-M5 is my travel camera and nearly anything camera.  I use it in the rain, snow and in dusty sandy conditions.  It is used in cold and hot temperatures and I carry extra batteries continuously as it does chew the batteries.  I always have a minumum of 2 batteries with me at all times.

Arcs, circles, orange, black - a partial solar eclipse

May

a partial solar eclipse

If you were in the right place this morning you would have had the opportunity to see the first solar eclipse of the year - in this case an Annular Solar Eclipse (often known as the ring of fire).  I wasn't in the right place so I was only ever going to see a partial solar eclipse this morning and to make things even more challenging, I also had to contend with an overcast cloud filled sky with a drizzle of rain.

Just another random week with the Panasonic GH3, iphone and Olympus OM-D E-M5

sun or moon

This weeks collection of photos really is just random - really random!  It includes a little astrophotography with the GH3 mounted directly to a telescope to photograph the sun and the moon.  I did also photograph Saturn - but was not at all happy with the resultant photos (mainly due to the tracking not working on the telescope.  I also used the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the iPhone 4s.  I seem to always have some device on me that I can use to take the occassional random photo and if that is an iPhone or something similar, such as the Samsung phone then thats what I will use.

Autumn in Hanoi with a dash of rain

Fish in the wet markets of Hanoi

One of my most favourite places to visit is Vietnam and in particular Hanoi. I find Vietnam to be a place where I am always learning something new and meeting very friendly people. I love walking the streets with a camera and experiencing all that Vietnam has to offer - including so many of the most fabulous local foods that can be found on the street. During my most recent visit to Hanoi, it was cool (being Autumn) and mostly rainy with the occassional gaps in the rain. There are quite a few photos presented here again liek my previous psots but I do ask ou to be patient as the photos load. Like all my recent travels these photos have been taken with that brilliant travel camera the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Olympus 12mm lens, Olympus 45mm lens and the Voigtlander 17.5mm lens.

From Beijing to the Great Wall of China

Dec

Wangfujing beijing

New adventures always equals a lot of new fun and opportunities to capture some great photographs. no matter how jet lagged you may be feeling at the time. I arrived in Beijing with quite a lot of sleep deprivation, however it was not long before I had charged all camera batteries and hit the streets for a few photos of this new amazing city called Beijing. The following set of photos tries to capture a little of what I saw in each of the places I was visiting or just wondering in Beijing. Like my other recent posts the photos taken here are based around the following three lenses - 12mm Olympus, 45mm Olympus and the 17.5mm Voigtlander. I did add an extra lens to the equation when I was at the Great Wall and that was the Panasonic 7-14mm lens.

Queensland Unions Rally in Brisbane with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and 75mm lens (part 2)

Qld Unions Rally

This is the second part of the story (or photos) from the Queensland Unions Rally in Brisbane. While the photos try to capture the essence of the rally it must also be noted that I was also having a little fun playing with the 75mm lens and if I had focused just on the rally I would have perhaps shot a number of the photos quite differently.  You will also notice more general street photos at the end of this post.

Qld Unions Rally in Brisbane

Today’s street photography shoot was a little different to the usual shutter therapy session due to the Queensland Unions rally taking place at close to the same time I was heading out for a few photos with the new Olympus 75mm f/1.8 lens.  As a street photographer, this is the perfect opportunity to truthfully portray what is happening on the street and let your photos tell the story.  The photos below depict what I saw during the rally and a few photos  near the city markets after the rally.  I have divided this post in to two parts due to the unusually large n

Awesome Olympus Service and a faulty OM-D E-M5

Jun

This post is a little unusual for my style of writing here, but because it got me thinking about what you buy when you buy a camera, I thought I would share my experiences with you.  Being a person that travels internationally regularly, the two things I do look for in a camera is reliability (or toughness) and great after sales service. You could probably add a lightweight system to this as well, but sometimes my Olympus E3 and E5 really did become heavy).

Photos of the transit of Venus

Transit of Venus

One of the most talked about events for 2012 in terms of astronomy is the transit of Venus across the Sun.  Perhaps one of the most significant reasons for this is that it will be a "once-in-a-life-time" event for many (unless you saw it in 2004 when it last happened).  It is predicted that the next time it will occur is in December 2117.  The transit takes place when Venus passes between the earth and the sun and is seen as a small disk or black dot moving across the face of the sun.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 (initial reaction)

May
19

I managed to get my hands on a new Olympus OM-D E-M5 (silver edition) with the weather sealed 12-50mm lens about a week ago, and while I haven't had much time to put it through some good testing, this camera has just been so much "fun" to use I have not ben able to put it down.  The box it came in was so small compared to my other DSLR cameras, I thought they had left something out of the packaging.
